Rising out of the reggae tunes of the 1960’s, Dub rapidly became a musical genre in its own right, one with a soaring popularity worldwide, not least here in Malta. Constantly evolving and assimilating diverse influences such as rock, punk, hip-hop, trip-hop, Jungle, Drum’n’Bass, ambient, techno and house, the genre has in turn also come to influence these musical styles itself.
Local dub, reggae and electronic music fans are in for a treat this October as newly founded Dub events organization Bass Culture launches its operations with a concert by French dub artist and producer Weeding Dub. Based in Lille, France, Weeding Dub has been a prominent dub artiste since 1999 and his 3 full length albums and countless EPs are considered to be gems of this bass heavy musical style.
A famously atypical musician, Weeding Dub’s sound is grounded in the Anglo-Jamaican Sound System culture. Weeding Dub shows are unpredictable, riotous affairs that have energized crowds in over 20 countries worldwide, including Mexico, Finland, Croatia and Cyprus.
Joining Weeding Dub on the bill for the night will be Danjeli with his eclectic mish mash of bassy sounds, Polish dub producer and DJ, Lubay Dub Service as well as local DJ, radio show host & music journalist Michael Bugeja with a classic dub set.
Bass Culture was founded by two dub music fanatics and is focused entirely on events for people who keep bass heavy genres such as Dub close to their heart. Offering something new and different to what is currently available in the local scene, Bass Culture is a haven for people who love reggae and other underground electronic music with a pronounced and heavy bass sound. The first Bass Culture event aims to be a dub knockout, with Weeding Dub taking to the stage and attempting to rumble Mosta’s Razzett l-Aħmar on Saturday, October 19th 2013. Meanwhile, Bass Culture’s Dub Diffusion Tour will visit the Remissa and Zion bars in an attempt to spread the love of dub to more fans.
Tickets to the Weeding Dub concert can be obtained from the Bass Culture website on http://bassculturemalta.com/ while Dub fans on Facebook can stay on the alert by following the Facebook page on https://www.facebook.com/BassCulture.
